Original description:
In RAW+JPEG mode, I'm noticing that “Hide already imported†fails on 8 JPEGs out of 10 JPEGs and 10 matching RAW files. What is different about these 8 JPEGs (or the other 2 JPEGs) is unknown to me.
With further investigation I discovered that the preview gPhoto is returning to us is different than the preview we're extracting from the file once it's on local disk. More interestingly, the MD5 of that preview is the same as the partner .CR2 file -- suggesting that the camera is returning the RAW preview for the JPEG, but only for 8 out of 10 JPEGs.

I'm noticing this with the Canon Powershot SD1200, except it seems to be failing with all JPEGs and AVIs – I've imported all files on the camera and nothing changes when toggling 'Hide already imported'.

“Hide already imported†also fails with my Canon PowerShot S90. Could it be that this is broken for all cameras? Have we seen this work for any camera in Shotwell 0.10?

I found that “hide already imported†also fails with my Android phone and iPhone. I think it's currently broken for all cameras.

Looks like this is also broken in 0.9 (at least for 0.9.3 with my Canon S90). Odd – I'm surprised nobody has noticed and told us.

I just checked and found that this did work in 0.8.1, so it looks like it broke during the 0.9 release cycle.

Turns out this is a side effect of the search bar. If you turn it on, hide already imported works.

There are couple more situations where hiding photos already imported fails, which apply to raw photos and videos only. For these types of media, we don't do a thumbnail comparison, instead we only check the filename and file size.
-
If you have “Rename imported files to lowercase†checked in the Shotwell preferences, the filename comparison fails because it's case- sensitive.
-
If you have multiple files with the same name, Shotwell won't compare them.
I'm thinking #2 (closed) is a difficult enough problem that I created ticket #3684 (closed) for it.

Reopening because this bug still occurs when the camera page is switched in from the last import page immediately after an import completes.
