It would be nice if Shotwell could perform a soft focus on a photo:

iPhoto, for example, offers this effect via its de-noise slider.

A good-looking approximation of this can be achieved by:

Copying the contents of the image to a second buffer and applying a Gaussian blur

Blending the blurred version of the image over the original with partial opacity
