Original author: Drew Kwashnak
Original description:
Similar to the watch folder request (#1961 (closed)) except this would allow upload and access to remote locations.
This would allow importing files into the remote location, such as a file server, from Shotwell instead of having to import into a local location.
It also provides Shotwell to watch that folder fro changes and provide full access to the files just as it does on the local variety.
It would work a little something like this.
Anna plugs her digital camera into her computer and imports the files into the file server location without having to save on her hard drive the files and then copy them over to the file server.
Barry opens Shotwell which displays the contents of the folder including the pictures Anna just imported. He changes some of the event names.
Anna goes back into Shotwell and finds the directories Barry changed as well as any changes to the other pictures.

Yes – we're also interested in making it possible to use Shotwell to share photos across a network. I'm marking this as a duplicate of #1292 (closed) , which is a request for more or less the same functionality. There are various ways we could implement this, one of which would involve uploading to a remote server (perhaps an arbitrary URL) as you suggest. Another way would involve peer-to- peer communications between the computers involved. I don't think this will happen in the next couple of releases, though; maybe later this year.
