Read-only format on iPod classic, sync attempt freezes system with error messages

Description
Please describe the problem: Whenever I attempt a sync for the first time to my 80GB iPod classic, two things happen. (1) I don't know the algorithm used, but it will forcibly try putting any new songs on the device, but it will fail because the iPod is in read-only format, and (2) it will generate a unique error message box for EACH failed attempt, which ultimately freezes the system for an extended period of time.
It was so awful on my system, I took a picture of my screen with my phone (http://i.imgur.com/L1LSzjl.jpg). The actual error message looks like this (http://i.j-f.co/u/8e2b33908fb83e3c4d99a76eaea4ade6.png).
Steps to reproduce:
- Connect iPod to computer, open in Rhythmbox, Sync.
- System will freeze and error messages begin appearing - can last anywhere around 10 minutes to 40 minutes.
- After waiting, you can begin closing 250+ boxes and figure out it is read-only.
Actual results: Failed attempt to sync and 250+ error messages that freeze the entire system.
Expected results: Successful sync to iPod or a single error message saying the device is read-only (along with possible suggestion to resolve?)
Build Date & Hardware: 3.1-1.fc21 on Fedora 21, kernel 3.18.7-200.fc21.x86_64

Does this happen every time? Yes
Additional Information: My iPod was created on my old iMac, so the format of the iPod is likely whatever the default for Apple's file system is.
