Manually copying podcasts creates multiple copies of existing podcasts

Description
I have an Ipod Nano 4th gen setup for manual sync. Copying podcasts to the iPod has been broken after updating from v. 2.90.1:
When I drag and drop podcasts to the iPod nothing happens in the interface to indicate a transfer. If I eject the iPod and browse the podcasts on the iPod, the new podcasts are not on the device. Sometimes however there will be an extra copy of some or all of the podcasts already on the device. I currently have 6-7 copies of each podcast on the device. The extra copies seems to be multiple entries to the same podcast: If I listen to a podcast all the copies are marked as listened to. If I browse the list of podcasts on the device through Rhythmbox only one copy of each podcast is shown. If I browse the device in iTunes on a windows machine I see as many copies of each podcast as on the device.
If have tried running rhythmbox with -d. Around the time when I drag the items to the device, this is written to the console: (19:57:35) [0xdc22c0] [save_timeout_cb] rb-ipod-db.c:885: Starting iPod database save (19:57:35) [0xdc22c0] [save_timeout_cb] rb-ipod-db.c:886: Switching iPod database to read-only (19:57:35) [0x24d7b70] [rb_itdb_save] rb-ipod-db.c:136: Writing iPod database to disk

If it matters I'm using the package supplied in 64bit Ubuntu 12.04.
