h264parse error when working with clip cut in avidemux

Description
I have a video file from a sony action camera. (Container ISO MP4/M4A, Codec H.264, Audio MPEG-4 AAC, from totem properties dialog). I cut out a section using avidemux, with video and audio both set to Copy (this gives me more manageable size clips for editing). This results in a file with container AVI, Codec ITU H.264 and audio MPEG-4 AAC.
If I use the cut clip in pitivi ( using recent bundles eg, 20150710-035354-pitivi-latest-x86_64) I get errors (below). I guess that avidemux could have made an invalid file, but totem and mplayer play it without errors. I suspect these clips are causing problems that prevent rendering complete in some more complicated projects.
I shall upload an archive with a test clip before and after cutting.
