JPG time lapse hangs around frame 75

Description
I made a time lapse sequence of JPG images (117 total images, at final size, 1 second duration, each) but both playback and rendering stall, without error message, at about frame 75. The stall occurred around frame 67 if the original images were larger than the rendered size. I tried many different renderings, but all stall at about the same point.
If I first play the sequence starting after frame 75, the playback proceeds to the end, but subsequently playing from the beginning stalls around frame 30, after that.
If I click any control except pause while stalled, the program completely locks and I have to force a quit.
