Shortening long filenames should not be 50%/50% but more like 80%/20%
Affected version
- Other: Fedora 37, Gnome 43.4, Files
Use cases
Long filenames are now shortened by showing 50% chars from the start and 50% from the end, but in many cases (e.g. a file starts with an author, year etc.) this isn't helpful. See below:
Available features and workarounds
Workarounds are 1) temporarily make the window bigger, 2) Select the filename, wait for the tooltip to appear and hope that that gives enough information, 3) use the rename dialog and arrow buttons to read the filename.
Difficulties and insufficiencies
I can see why the end of the name is useful i.e. telling "Rocky 4" from "Rocky 5", but I suspect a division of 80% start 20% end or even 90/10 would be more helpful.
