Getting article count without downloading headers

Description
I have to assume that it is possible to get an article count for each group without having to actually download the headers; not only did Xnews do this years ago, back when I was on Windows, but also Pan does give you what appears to be an accurate percentage of its progress downloading headers. In other words, it seems to know ahead of time that there are 10,000 articles in group X, and that the 500 headers it has already downloaded are therefore 5%.
This would be a nice feature, since one could decide ahead of time if a given group's numbers would seem to justify eating into one's monthly download limit to browse its contents. One might be wary of very extremely numbers as being too time-consuming, or of very small article numbers as indicating dead groups.
I thank you very much in advance for your attention to this.
