Count of folder content may be confusing when there is hidden content
Properties of folders now always include the hidden files and folders in the total size and content count of the folder, even when the option to show hidden files is off.
There are concerns this might create confusion when users see a number of items in properties which doesn't match that's expected from visible content. There is also a possibility of the hidden size being a source of confusion if it doesn't match the sum of the sizes of items shown in the view.
This has originally been discussed in #638 (closed).
A summary of the main points:
- Informing about the presence of hidden files can:
- clarify confusing situations;
- prevent sharing sensitive information;
- should probably treat non-hidden files located within hidden folders as effectively hidden;
- shouldn't undermine the intent of hiding them.
- Like any extra information:
- it can lead to long labels messing with the layout;
- it has risks of verbosity and excess of information;
- it can be a candidate to progressive disclosure.
