Adding open with defaults
Use cases
When setting another program to open the file type it is really hard to find for the new users that the option would be available in the properties option.
Desired behavior
When setting another program to open the file type instead of going and doing it into properties > open with
tab, instead making it simpler to just set it in the open with
menu that we get on right clicking on the file and have an option there with view all applications
stating something like set this as default for the file type
.
Benefits of the solution
This makes it pretty clear that where the option would be because when a person is trying to open a file in a different program they are most likely to be wanting to set that as default. This would, in my opinion, enchance the UX slightly. Also, this is the default way of doing this on windows, even tho I am not a windows user and have left it more than a year ago and using linux since, windows approach makes much sense.
Possible drawbacks
This might impact the existing gnome users and might end up rendring some of answers on the forumes about this useless if the open with
tab is removed and this issue is kept as the default behaviour, example here: https://askubuntu.com/questions/61641/how-to-change-the-default-program-for-pdf-only-for-current-user
