Screen freezes upon entering fullscreen in wayland

Debian unstable
Mutter 45.rc and gnome-shell 45.rc compiled from source
Wayland session
Bug summary
When entering fullscreen mode in various apps (e.g. firefox, vlc) the session inconsistently freezes in various slightly different ways: the whole screen gets frozen, or the window is frozen but the mouse pointer moves, or the screen goes black, or the window is only partially rendered. This behavior is not consistent and tends to increase in longer sessions. Switching to another tty and back may or may not resolve the issue. Journalctl for gnome-shell gives no errors, I don't know the relevant logfile for mutter. I am not sure this issue belongs here or in gnome-shell
Steps to reproduce
- Open an application that handles videos (vlc, firefox)
- Set the video fullscreen
What happened
The screen freezes (inconsistently and in different manners)
What did you expect to happen
The video plays normally
