Overview animation performance degrades significantly over time
Affected version
- Arch Linux
- mutter 42.4
- Wayland session
Bug summary
Within a single GNOME session, Overview performance starts to degrade significantly over time passed since login. Particularly, the first and last frames of the enter and exit animations respectively cause an extreme display lag/freeze (0.5-1s). (As a consequence, the whole Overview enter animation gets skipped.)
I'm using GNOME Shell on a laptop, so I'm not sure if performance degrades simply with time, or if it's frequent suspend/resume cycles and lid open/close events that actually matter.
System configuration: i7-8550U / UHD 620 / 16 GiB RAM
Steps to reproduce
- Start a GNOME Wayland session
- Open several windows (Terminal, Evolution, Firefox), spend some time in the session
- Attempt to enter/exit Overview
What happened
Severe lags on the first frame of the Overview enter animation and on the last frame of the Overview exit animation. Overall Overview animation performance degrades over time spent in the session.
What did you expect to happen
No performance degradation, no display freezing.
