Button toggle state styling
Trying to break up #228 (closed) into more manageable pieces.
The status quo active styling works well for the non-toggle case, e.g. when a button opens a popover or performs an action. However, for cases where the button's main purpose is indicating an on/off state, the styling is too faint.
My current feeling is there's no one-size-fits-all solution, rather we should look at individual cases and find separate solutions for those cases.
Cases that I feel are more or less figured out:
- Inline exclusive toggles (#212)
- Sidebar view switchers (needs more design, but the basic idea is using view switcher styling, i.e. background on active item, borderless non-active items)
Remaining problematic cases:
- Single standalone toggle buttons
- Groups of exclusive toggle buttons, in particular ones where the "switch" style from #212 isn't applicable
- Standalone toggle buttons in list rows (e.g. #228 (comment 1301123)). This one is connected to the broader question what we want to do with list box buttons (regular raised? border-only? flat?).
