gnome-disk-utilitiy lock/unlock icons don't work well as emblems for small icons

Description
Gnome 2.27.91 (on Ubuntu Karmic), Nuvola font.
I have a drivemount applet that includes an encrypted partition - I can't distinguish the locked and unlocked state. I tracked this down to the icon coming through gnome-disk-utility with the gdu_encrypted_lock.svg and unlock.svg as emblems.
The shackle on the padlock when used as an emblem in the panel is only about 4 pixels high; it's also whitey/grey and so is the disk icon that the emblem is overlayed on. I'm not sure what the right fix for this would be or how to make the shackle more visible; perhaps the solution here is to change the unlocked state to have a key in the lock which should be visible against the lock body. (Or maybe the emblem approach is just the wrong way to go for something that can end up as a panel icon).
This is the corresponding Ubuntu bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-applets/+bug/398520
(I'm not sure if gvfs->general was the right place to put this but I couldn't find the gdu section).
