easing programming to display accelerators and shortcuts

Description
Shortcuts and accelerators should be displayed in application menus without an additional keystroke each just to display, such as in gedit, but I'm told that GTK+ makes this difficult (bug 753215, comment 5). Please make it easier so they'll be programmed in. I'm lousy at memorizing large quantities of data and memorizing most of these commands is unlikely among most people who use their computers mainly to get noncomputer work done, like most office work. Requiring the extra stroke means it usually won't get pressed and therefore the app usually looks like it does not support accelerators and shortcuts.
Relevant are bug 155699, bug 680323, bug 695775, and bug 753666 (the last rejects the idea but hopes for an overlay widget that would allow it and I think perhaps that should be the default). Possibly relevant are bug 127227, bug 143007, bug 404343, and bug 516425.
