inspector: Long action names not ellipsized, "Name" column causes minimum window width to expand, cannot be resized down
As observed with GTK 4.8.2 on GNOME 43.1 with Nautilus 43.1:
- Create some folders in
~/Templates
, and put some files in those with some fairly long filenames (with spaces and accents, for example) - Launch Nautilus
-
Ctrl+L
to focus Nautilus' pathbar as an editable text widget (so that Nautilus' shortcuts don't interfere) -
Ctrl+Shift+i
to spawn the Gtk Inspector
Result: this huge Gtk Inspector window cannot fit a single screen (it spans two!) and cannot be resized down:
Remarks:
- This was not the case in GTK3.
- This experienced this primarily with Nautilus. I don't remember encountering this particular situation with other GTK4 apps so far.
I went through the various tabs in the Gtk Inspector to determine what might be causing the window to expand like that, and it seems to be that the values of the actions' "Name" column does not use automatic ellipsization, so if you have long paths and filenames like me in your ~/Templates
folder, Nautilus will use these as action names, and kaboom:
