GtkTextView: Touch text select UI is frustrating
Sorry, I'm not sure if this is the right repo or not. (I guess this could be a GTK+ upstream issue) Also this report is very personal, since I'm not 100% sure what other people expect from a touch UI here. However, to me the touch text select UI is so frustrating, it makes me want to throw the device at a wall every time I try to use it. Every basic action I do I fail, and it just feels utterly broken and designed to do always what I NOT want to do.
It violates a few basic rules that I remember Android always following (do I remember that so incorrectly?) and I want to eat my fingers because I just don't know how to make this thing do anything I want:
-
Long pressing with no selection or touch cursor of any kind visible yet should always select the word underneath. This is not what happens. I get a single cursor with touch handle that I can move around, and I tap the screen long and short while cursing because I cannot figure out how to switch to "actually select something mode". The select all button is completely useless here because now while i have the two draggable handles to get them where I want to be, now in any non-trivial length document I'll be spending an hour trying not to lose them and moving them across pages to where I actually want them. Aaaahh!
-
When something is selected of 1+ letters, dragging any of the two handles should not just make one disappear and deselect everything even if I drag them close. The opposite is the case, this happens all the time like it's trying to make me cry and start over the whole process. Like just when I almost got the right selection, poof, selection handles both gone and just a single cursor again where I can't easily fix my mistake... urghs.
-
When something is selected, a SHORT tap anywhere should remove the selection and put a single cursor where I tapped. This is again absolutely the exact opposite of what happens, instead only then an extensive menu pops up. This should have popped up the second the selection happened, not with some extra action. Am I remembering Android really that badly or is this just going against all common conventions? I feel so lost with all of it.
Anyway, this has been me trying to use the touch selectors. I dread every time I need to, it's so frustrating.
