More semantic icon name for sorting column views
Right now it appears GTK uses pan-up-symbolic
and pan-down-symbolic
for ascending and descending sorting, respectively. This has lead to some confusion as some people interpret ▲ as "upward" and ▼ as "downward". This confusion is compounded by GTK3 seeming to use them in the reverse orientation.
These icons are also used in other contexts in GTK, meaning they cannot be modified by the icon theme without causing them to make less sense elsewhere.
To avoid confusion and let the platform icon theme determine the appropriate symbol to use in this context, GTK could use a more semantic icon name like, sort-ascending-symbolic
and sort-descending-symbolic
. Then GNOME could use the same sort of ▲▼ icons if desired, while other platforms could use something less ambiguous.
