links and recaptcha
Regarding the new bug reporting setup. First, some of the documentation does not link to this, having the gtk+ link so-called "rick-roll" you into gitlab and a new setup is a little unfriendly.
But for instance https://www.gtk.org/support.php has nothing about the gitlab link, https://www.gtk.org/development.php lists GNOME bugzilla, and then you have to go to the Gnome core platform setup and then gtk+ and then, etc..
The other thing... I saw that this gitlab login uses "recaptcha". Please, in the interest of net neutrality, suggest to the gitlab people with the authority of GNOME, not to use recaptcha. Google is tracking everyone using every site through that recaptcha stuff, that often doesn't even work the first few times, and it's simply not necessary. Don't give Google more power than they already have. Don't do it because I said so, think about it.
Thanks.
Edit:
I need to maybe mention a scenario here, at the risk of sounding like a conspiracy theorist. I don't think anyone would argue that the governments of the world are not corrupt. And if there's no real government, and people don't have clear moral values, then anything there is a profit motive for is done. Google has already sold access to users' emails to the NSA. Google tracks anything it can get its hands on for marketing purposes.
A few years ago there was a so-called "cybersecurity" bill that could have been argued to outlaw open source software. It didn't pass congress but who knows whether that would be enforced. How many open source programmers are there? Not as many as there are senior citizens or working class people... not really a voting bloc and that's assuming that politicians care about their constituents.
What if the government decided that open source software aided so-called "hackers". Most cell phones are locked to their operating system. The government could say that anyone who wanted to use open source software would have to have a license to, and google could provide those licenses and authentication. Anyone who wanted to get around that would have to have 5000 for a device to re-burn the ROM on their operating system boot-locked computers, which would not be available to students or the poor.
What about recaptcha. What if the government considered, which I'm sure they already do, that open source software mentality was possibly associated with communist or socialist leanings. Google and recaptcha might already have a list of the names and addresses of everyone who accesses open source websites.
Maybe none of this happened today, but what about tomorrow?
I apologize for posting this in a bug tracker.
But please, remove the recaptcha or talk to someone about it.
