Cannot generate new UUID for ext4 partition not recently fsckd
I'm using gparted
1.3.1 on Arch Linux, and my system has e2fsprogs
1.46.4.
I attempted to use gparted
to generate a new UUID for an ext4 partition /dev/sda2
, and gparted got the following error when running tune2fs -U random '/dev/sda2'
:
tune2fs -U random '/dev/sda2' 00:00:00 ( ERROR )
tune2fs 1.46.4 (18-Aug-2021)
This operation requires a freshly checked filesystem.
Please run e2fsck -f on the filesystem.
I've attached gparted_details.htm
:
The context is that I've used disk cloning to restore from a backup, and as a result my backup drive and main drive now have the same UUIDs for their partitions. This is no good as my backup script needs to be able to distinguish them.
I tried running e2fsck -f
on /dev/sda2
, but didn't have the time to wait for it to complete, so can't verify that that fixed the issue. I'll verify this later and report back.
