Reconsider preferences sidebar
The preferences sidebar is a bit weird structurally, because unlike any of our other sidebars
- It can only be opened from a menu (rather than a persistent toggle button)
- There's a centered title and close button
- It uses a listbox layout for its content
None of these are particularly problematic by themselves, but combined they make for a pretty unorthodox pattern.
Somewhat related: I'm not sure I understand on what basis options are in the View
menu vs. Preferences. Is the idea that all the commonly used things are in the menu, while less commonly used stuff is in Preferences? The split feels a little weird at the moment, since the sidebar is more prominent than the menu in some ways.
A few possible ways forward:
- Drop the sidebar and move preferences back into a secondary window
- Add a toggle button to the headerbar that opens/closes the sidebar, and drop the
Preferences
entry from the primary menu - Have a single sidebar with all preferences, including the ones from the current
View
popover, maybe with multiple tabs like in Builder's sidebar
