gnome-terminal-server high CPU load

Description
Gnome terminal constantly uses 5~10% of one core in my Haswell i7. This is with no input, output or otherwise any application running except for the bash prompt.
The high CPU usage goes away if the window loses focus and consistently returns when it's focused again. The load disappears even if the window is being drawn but not focused. 100% reproducible in both my computer and my similarly configured work VM.
Software versions: vte3 0.42.3 gtk3 3.18.7 linux 4.4.1 cinnamon 2.8.6 g. term. 3.18.2
No other terminal emulator has this issue (including vte based, although I think they don't use vte3???). No other gnome software from the 3.18 series has this issue. Also note I haven't used gnome terminal for years, it may be an old issue or brand new, although I find no bug report for it...
Version: 3.18.x
Resolution: RESOLVED INCOMPLETE
