Set wmclass based on running command

Description
(the summary is probably too prescriptive and maybe the wrong implementation, but...)
I would like more intelligent grouping of gnome-terminal instances in gnome-shell.
For example, if I have 2 midnight commander instances running, these should be grouped together in the alt+tab switcher.
Similarly, if I have multiple vim instances open, I should be able to switch between them using alt+`.
Currently instances of vim,mc,and otherwise idle gnome-terminal instances (for browsing the system, etc) are all shown together.
This could rapidly become problematic, but perhaps a small whitelist of 'terminal applications' would get a long way towards a solution.
- vim
- emacs
- midnight commander
