xmodmap not working with textwidgets.

Submitted by joh..@Description
Package: gnome-terminal Version: 1.2.0
xmodmap settings are ignored by Gnome. I'm using Solaris 8 sparc, Helix Gnome 1.2. I've got a problem with my left hand, and to reach from Alt gr to 2 on a Type 5 keyboard would require a quite large right hand that I haven't got. So i map Alt-gr to Alt (using xmodmap) to comfortably get the @-character. This never works in any gnome textwidget, although it works in dtmail, netscape, Xterm, KDE....
My .Xmodmap:
keycode 26 = Mode_switch keycode 129 = Alt_L
