Closing tab kills children indiscriminately

Description
If I close a tab in GNOME Terminal via the close button, then all children are killed badly. If say I had launched gedit& and had some unsaved documents, gedit is killed so bad that it doesn't even prompt to save those documents.
Other information: Note that using Ctrl-D to close the shell (and thus tab) does not cause gedit to die.
I'm assuming this is because there is no code to detect shell vs. other app in foreground vs. terminal app in background vs. graphical app in background. I don't know if we'd want to have non-X backgrounded apps still running after a tab is closed. X-apps should definitely stay open.
