Character deletion problem with UTF8 encoding

Description
With gnome-terminal set to UTF8 strange things happen when trying to delete german umlaut characters (ü, ö and the like) using the backspace key.
What happens is this: "ü" key is pressed, "ü" is displayed. When I now press backspace the character is deleted (as it should be), but when I press enter / return on that (now empty) input line, the terminal gives me an error:
$
-bash:
;: command not found
$
So it seems it doesn't handle some characters correctly (are german umlauts multibyte characters in UTF8? don't know). The same thing happens with french accents (é, è etc.) and probably some more characters.
