Need a configuration setting for $TERM

Description
gnome-terminal sets $TERM=xterm in the environment. There appears to be no way to change this, other than in one of the shell startup files. However, the default is not to run the command as a login shell, which means that it doesn't interpret /etc/profile or ~/.profile .
Could we have a configuration setting in the gnome-terminal profile to set $TERM to some other value? This would be convenient for vendors and system administrators when the `xterm' terminfo definition does not work correctly with gnome-terminal.
