don't know how to read ISO-8859-1 data!

Description
Description of Problem: when I try to run gnome-terminal from the icon on menubar, it hangs saying:
Application 'gnome-terminal' (process 25635) has crashed due to a fatal error. (Aborted)
trying to launch from an xterm window, giv me some other usefull (i hope) info:
$ gnome-terminal ** ERROR **: Dont't know how to read ISO-8859-1 data! aborting...
(gnome_segv:25664): Gdk-WARNING **: Error converting from UTF-8 to STRING: Conversion from character set 'UTF-8' to 'ISO-8859-1' is not supported

Steps to reproduce the problem:
- launch from icon or from command line
Actual Results: no terminal window
Expected Results: a cute terminal window
How often does this happen? every time
Additional Information: Slackware 8.1 without X sopport Dropline Installer downloaded and launched on Feb-02-2003 maybe some package missing ???
