CTRL-v paste function conflicts with vi

Description
using CTRL-v in the gnome-terminal conflicts with vi.
I often have to removed special characters placed in text files by MacOS computers that are not needed under Linux. These characters show up as ^M in vi. I usually use :% s/^M/\r/g to replace these, and because ^M is a special character I have to type CTRL-v-m to get this character to appear. However, CTRL-v now pastes in vi making it impossible to type this special character.
Steps to reproduce.
- Select some text from a gnome application (gEdit will work)
- Copy it (CTRL-c)
- Open a gnome-terminal.
- run vi (vi example.txt)
- press ESC
- type ': s/' (exclude the quotes)
- now press and hold ctrl-v-m. A ^M character should appear, but instead you will see the text you have cut after pressing the v, and then SEARCH NOT FOUND after pressing the m.
This is always reproducable.
