Please ignore traffic coming from veth
Right now, Gnome System Monitor counts every packet coming from every interface, excluding those that have loopback interfaces or link-local IPv6.
I think that there should be more exceptions, and one of them is veth. veth are increasingly used in Linux desktop, because they are much related to network namespaces, an isolation technique that is gaining traction. So there are real users that have veth and will get incorrect numbers.
Here is a real-world example:
In Tails - a portable operating system designed to protect against surveillance and censorship - we have a slightly complex network setup. Some of the user software run in a dedicated network namespace. A veth connects those namespaces to the tor
instance that is acting as a proxy. This means that:
- numbers are higher than they should be
- download speed is actually summed to upload speed. In fact, any packet that is received by your wifi dongle is also sent to a veth.
The result is very confusing to users. To them, seeing that lot of data is being uploaded when they are actually only browsing the web can seem to be a sign of data exfiltration.
Could you please implement this change? thanks!
