Searching for updates always results in a 'cache too old' error

Description
On my laptop, running Fedora 24, I can never do a system update through GNOME Software. Every time I go to the Updates tab and hit the 'refresh' button at top left, it goes off and works for a while, then displays an error "cache too old: (some huge number) > 600". Which isn't much use to me.
I've tried wiping various files under /var/cache/PackageKit and /var/cache/hawkey to try and shift this, but I obviously haven't found the right one yet...
