Reduce frequency of update checks when on a metered network connection
In the responses to the GNOME metered data survey, 1.5% of respondents specifically pointed out that updating dnf metadata takes a lot of bandwidth (the metadata is 70MB compressed), which makes quite an impact on a metered connection.
Currently, we have the refresh-when-metered
GSetting which allows metadata updates to be disabled completely when metered. I was wondering if we could have a middle ground, where refresh-when-metered
is enabled, but the refresh frequency is lowered compared to when on an unmetered connection. For example, checking for updates once a day rather than hourly. This is just a suggestion to start discussion; I’m sure other solutions are possible.
