I used GNOME Software for three weeks before noticing the little Reload button up in the right corner of the Updates tab. It’s located where a Back button is usually found so I mentally assumed it was a Back button without giving it any attention.
There should, however, be a big “Check for updates” button on the main page itself. The user is opening that tab expecting to find some update. Having it display “Last checked: 06:01” at 18:38 in the evening when you’re expecting there to be updates is a bit frustrating. A check for updates button would give the user something to do and a sense of control rather than being controlled.
Alternative 1: Label the small round Reload button in the corner with “Check for updates”.
Alternative 2: Just opening the Updates tab could be rigger another updates check. Google Play Store: Updates, OS X App Store: Updates, and iOS Store: Updates and iTunes: Apps: Updates all does this. Windows 10’s Store doesn’t do it but they have a big Check for updates button.
