More intuitive way to install raw package updates (files). GUI shows "Open" instead of "Update"
Please describe the issue you’re experiencing:
- When you double-click a raw package for the first time, such as
.rpm
, you get a GNOME Software view with an "Install" button. It's good and intuitive. - In the future, when you double-click a NEWER version of the raw package file, you get a very bad GNOME Software view with an "Open" button, a weird
(null) (RPM)
in the top right, and no obvious way to update to the newer package file. See screenshot:
I have been resorting to opening a terminal and running sudo dnf install <the rpm file>
which automatically updates the installed package. I am not sure how to achieve the same with GNOME Software. I've been afraid to hit GNOME Software's "Uninstall/Trash" icon to install the new package, in case that process is different and leads to some "cleanup scripts" that would delete my settings for the app.
It would be better if GNOME Software showed an "Update" icon if you have double-clicked a newer version of an RPM package file, and that it takes care to do a proper update that doesn't uninstall the user's existing settings.
What Linux distribution are you using, and what kind of package (RPM, deb, flatpak, etc.) are you experiencing the problem with?
Fedora 36, fully updated.
GNOME Software is gnome-software-42.4-1.fc36
.
