No information that my Linux account user name is going to be used for review
GNOME Software automatically uses the user name set for the actual Linux account. The dialog window makes absolutely no mention of that fact prior to publishing the review, it looks like this:
I think this is a pretty glaring privacy issue, especially since you can't easily delete or alter reviews after the fact from within the UI (afaik). Simply updating the user name temporarily in the GNOME Settings also does not seem to do any good here. I will also note that I rather avoid adding reviews given the current issues.
I would like to advocate for two things:
-
In the review window shown above, please add a line at the top to make this extra clear:
Posting as Slim Shady Rating * * * * * [...]
(Assuming I have set my name to "Slim Shady" of course.)
-
Allow setting up a pseudonym before the user creates a review for the first time. I'd suggest a flow like: User goes to an app page, clicks "Write a review" for the first time ever, and is then asked "What name would you like to use publicly?" or similar. After saving that name, they'd get the normal review window.
I am using the Ubuntu 22.04 deb package gnome-software
v41.5 (i.e. the upstream GNOME variant of the package not the Ubuntu Store variant).
There's a previous related (closed) issue that was closed that raises some more good points and doesn't seem like it was fully implemented: #180 (closed).
