Improve the sources dropdown
There are various issues with the sources dropdown:
- Its placement in the header is misleading - it suggests that changing the source will somehow affect the whole view, but that isn't true. The page content is inedepedent of the source.
- It's labelled "Source", but it's not just source - it's also format.
- The layout of the list is pretty bad and hard to read.
- The format of the button label isn't very nice.
- There's no way to tell which versions are currently installed, without going through each one.
I've produced some new designs for the sources dropdown, which attempt to resolve these issues. These are based on previous mockups by @bertob . They move the dropdown button, so that it's below the install/open/remove button:
This makes it much clearer what's going on. When you go to install, it clearly communicates "this is the thing you,re going to install".
The popover itself is also redesigned, so that it looks nicer and is easier to read. It also includes the check icon to indicate if a version is installed:
In the past I argued that we should warn users off from installing multiple versions of the same app, due to the issues that can happen in those cases. That's still a concern, but people are going to use multiple versions, and I'm not sure that warning them off is going to achieve very much.
