Quick Settings popup radius is inconsistent with GNOME shell
Affected version
- Affected version: GNOME Shell 43.1
- OS and version: Ubuntu 22.10
- Does this issue appear in XOrg and/or Wayland: Both
- Does this issue happen without extensions:Yes
Bug summary
The radii at the four corners of the Quick Settings popup are inconsistent with the radii used in other windows and popups within GNOME Shell. The Application Menu, Notifications popup, and application windows all have a smaller radius. This leads the desktop to appear inconsistent.
Steps to reproduce
- Open an application window. Notice the radii of the window corners.
- Click on Notifications. Notice the radii of the window corners.
- Click on Quick Settings. Note that the radii are larger than those from steps 1 and 2.
What happened
The radii at the four corners of the Quick Settings popup were larger than those of other windows and popups within GNOME Shell.
What did you expect to happen
I expected radii at the four corners of the Quick Settings popup to exactly match the radii of other windows and popups within GNOME Shell.
Justification / Rationalization
I understand that people very worked hard to design the Quick Settings popup, an may be very passionate about its final design. However, I'd like the designers and developers to revisit this.
The decision to use such large radii may have based on the aesthetics of the Quick Settings by itself. For example the round power button is concentric to the top right corner radius of Quick Settings. This decision makes Quick Settings look nice by itself. But when Quick Settings in considered as a part of the whole, rather than a stand-alone element, it does not fit with the design style of the GNOME shell desktop environment.
There may have also been a desire to make Quick Settings stand out from a usability perspective. However, I argue that Quick Settings already occupies a prominent and discoverable position on the desktop. It is already distinct, because of the buttons, layout, and location. There is no need to distinguish it further.
As for the round buttons within Quick Settings, there is no need for these to drive the radius of the window.
Lastly, I see that the radii of Quick Settings matches the radii of the workspaces in Activities Overview. However, this overview is a "background" for each workspace, and Quick Settings is more like a regular popup or window.
Therefore, the radii of the corners of the Quick Settings popup should match the radii of other windows, dialogs, the Notifications popup, etc. within GNOME shell.
