GDM and gnome-shell "frozen" when using Wayland

Bug summary
When GDM starts via systemd, or user starts gnome-shell in tty with --wayland
option, the tty appears to remain in text mode, the text cursor stops flashing, and the keyboard becomes unresponsive (no ability to switch between tty via Ctrl+Alt+Fn).
Some digging so far seems to reveal that GDM and gnome-shell are being started, but for some reason, is not rendering on screen. A bug in Arch Linux is tracking this and has some detail, including systemd journal logs, ps captures and gdb thread backtraces:
