When rearranging windows (e.g. on monitor layout change), treat split windows as a single maximized window
Affected version
- Fedora 36
- Gnome & gnome-shell 42
Bug summary
After using left-maximize and right-maximize two windows on a single monitor, I still subconsciously expect that these will be treated as one when doing any shuffling not explicitly requested by me (by de-maximizing of one of those or moving just one of them). E.g. when after docking ends up one on one monitor and the other on different one and third window is partly-covered, I have to calm down - after years of this feature use.
So the scenario that should IMO 100% be handled is: when rearranging windows after monitor layout change, treat split pair as one window.
Design of other scenarios such what should happen when user moves window is trickier (when to take just one of them and when two?) so I'd leave these to further discussion so that no regressions are introduced for users who are OK with current behaviour.
Steps to reproduce
- dock laptop with some split-pair of windows and some different windows
- ...
What happened
split pair is likely to be torned
What did you expect to happen
split pair remains together
