Smooth scrolling using touchpad continues when activities view is accessed through META-key
Affected version
GNOME: 40.4.0 System: Pop!OS 21.10
Bug summary
Smooth scolling has a feature that imitates inertia. I will call it "inertia mode" here. Basically, if one scrolls quickly enough using the touchpad and then lets go, it continues for some time and slows down eventually. This feels really natural. However, when one presses the meta-key during inertia-mode, the animation does not stop, but instead continues even inside the activities view. This can be problematic, because when scrolling and pressing meta quickly in succession, the system interprets it as smooth scrolling and the user might not recognize the other contents the program has scrolled to when looking for it in the activities view.
Steps to reproduce
- Open any program that allows smooth scrolling with enough headroom, e.g. firefox with a long webpage or a folder in nautilus that contains lots of files
- Swipe with two fingers along the touchpad quickly, and let go, so that it keeps scrolling
- Press the meta key to open the activities overview
- Watch the miniature of the window you were just scrolling it
What happened
Opening the activities view did not stop "inertia-mode" (see summary)
What did you expect to happen
Smooth scrolling to stop when opening the activities view
Smooth scrolling to be stopped when opening the activities view (maybe even smoothly, by slowing down quickly)
