More pleasant way of showing that names of application clusters are editable
Hi. This is my first try at a Gnome mockup, so please be overbearing. I come with great respect for all the time and hard work you put into this fantastic project, and only want to help. I searched before posting, and if there's anything I do wrong here, or anything else I should do to be a better contributor, please let me know. Unfortunately I can't code, but I want to be of help.
So my idea:
One thing I love about Gnome is that most things are unintrusive: Things you don't need at the moment are invisible, but still easy and intuitive to find when you need them.
That's why I find the edit name button in the application clusters (sorry, I don't know the official name. See screenshots below) in the Application grid so out of place. You very seldom need that, but it's always shown. To me it's just too much in your face, and thus looks bad.
My idea would be to remove the button on regular view, and then show that the name can be changed by a mouseover effect when you move the cursor close to the name of the cluster. This would put a familiar looking textbox on the name, and if you click it the box edges turn blue as normal textboxes to show it's active and you can start typing.
I've tried to make a simple mockup of what I mean.
On mouseover. The edge should not be blue until you click, but I couldn't find an Inkscape asset showing the box like that, sorry.
When you click anywhere in the box it should go to the same state as when you click the button today.
Another way of doing it would be to show the edit button on mouseover instead.
That's it. Let me know what you think.
