shortcut to "Minimize Other/Background Windows"? (feature idea)
In my office I have a large 28'' screen. Sometimes I need just one window. I'd like to hide/minimize the other windows so that I don't get distracted by their contents.
This would allow some kind of "focus" mode. Maximising the window doesn't really help because I prefer the main content centered and not at the periphery of my vision.
I don't think that there is a shortcut or quick workaround for this (at least according to this two weeks old reddit question and this old askfedora question.
One idea on reddit was to combine two actions: "hide all windows" + restoring the desired window either by going to the Activities Overwiew and selecting the window or by using shortcuts (Alt+Tab and while alt is still pressed by shift+tab). Both work but the latter solution requires you to twist your arm uncomfortably and both are distracting: The area where I focus my attention changes so after changing the windows I have to refocus again whereas a shortcut "minimize other windows" makes this distraction-free (for me).
Another idea on reddit was to move the window to a different workspace. But this works only the first time and after some time all my workspaces have windows left.
Minimizing other windows is not necessary on my notebook because of their small screens: For me (and most other gnome users i know) ususally one window covers the whole screen. But as I said in my office I plug into an external screen.
A shortcut to "Minimize Other / Background Windows" is available on Mac(Command + Option + H) and Windows(Win+Home). On a Mac you can get a view of all open windows by pressing one key using the so called "Mission Control" feature. Even though this is somewhat similar to Gnome's Activities MacOS still offers a shortcut for "Minimize background windows" (at least I'm not the only one who wants such a feature).
I use Gnome 3.28 in Fedora 28
