gnome-shell process priority/niceness
- Ryzen 1700X
- R9 Fury
- 144Hz monitor
- gnome-shell 3.36.4
I was compiling mesa with all 16 threads loaded (using ninja
) and noticed that the shell performance was very degraded. It's particularly visible when switching workspaces or switching the activity view. After adjusting the shell's niceness to -10, it was visibly smoother. I don't have exact numbers, but it felt like 60fps vs 30fps with the default niceness of 0. That's not perfect but definitely an improvement.
Considering the compositor is latency sensitive, it would make sense to set the niceness to a negative value by default, and switch it back to a high number when alls CRTCs get unredirected.
