GNOME Shell UX Plans: HowTo ``Tip-of-the-day`` for new users about common tasks
" ... In my experience, migrating users from MS Windows or macOS, the first thing that is confusing to them is: Where did my Taskbar go?
Once I show them the Activities
menu and the various ways to access it(Word-Click / Hot-Corner / Super-Key), they are less alarmed. However, there are years(decades) of muscle memory to overcome in such cases and I think it would be helpful to have a Tip Window
(floating) that opens at every login with a checkbox, i.e. [ ] Don't show this anymore
, etc. on how to find the various app launchers and other common tasks.
Additionally, many users begin to notice the similarities of the GNOME 3 UX with that of their smartphones or tablets. I would suggest that offering a toggle switch to Always show Activities overview
in the Settings
app, when all other windows are closed or minimized, would satisfy the great majority of complaints about this issue and solve the Where did my Desktop icons go?
question at the same time."
