Can't use pinyin entry method when keyboard is configured as AZERTY

Bug summary
When the keyboard is set to AZERTY and then set to Pinyin it is impossible to enter chinese characters.
Steps to reproduce
- Set keyboard to AZERTY
- Set keyboard to Pinyin
- Type something (ie. "xiexie")
- Type "&/1" key to select 谢谢
What happened
The &
character is repeated until the ESC key is pressed.
What did you expect to happen
谢谢 being typed
Relevant logs, screenshots, screencasts etc.
AZERTY layouts require the user to use the shift key to enter numbers which is not the case for many other layouts. That might be the reason of this odd behavior.
