Keybindings grabbing rework (backport to 3.32)

This is the patchset from !89 (closed) backported to 3.32.

The patch is relatively large, however, the GNOME Shell part has landed, and landing this during the 3.32.x cycle might fix issues like #151 (closed). So, while it is a bit dangerous, it could be worth doing if the patch has received some more testing.
