not possible to blank screen, when not using gdm

Description
I don't use gdm nor do I want to.
It's not possible to simply blank the screen because xset settings are overridden. I don't understand the reasoning given in the source-code: https://github.com/rebootl/gnome-settings-daemon/blob/master/plugins/power/gpm-common.c#L194
"could cause monitor power-saving to occur, and all manner of heinousness" Really ? (When I use gdm and enable screen blanking the monitor goes into "no-signal" mode after about two seconds.)
At least make this optional. If you don't want to, then make gdm a hard dependency.
Thanks
