Very initial foundation work required for importing from devices

While the work on importing content from removable devices (ie. #29 (closed)) is still ongoing, I am confident that some aspects of that work are already in a reasonably mature state. Here are a few patches that lay some of the very initial groundwork on which the entire feature is based.
