Using Maps behind VPN

I use a VPN for security reasons. When I try to use Maps it says that I am offline and to check my internet connection and proxy settings. Even if I turn off the VPN it will still not connect. If I reboot and do not turn on the VPN it will work as expected. I apologize if I am missing something in the setting as my Linux knowledge is very minimal but I would really like to get this software working in this environment. As far as I know none of my other software is affected in this manner.
